Four Decisions for the Social Sector

Organizations that successfully sustain their performance and growth make the right decisions in four areas:  People, Strategy, Execution and Cash.  This premise and the fact that there is a definite set of fundamental habits that lead to success are the foundation of the Gazelles Rockefeller Habits Coaching Program.  The program, a combination of executive planning workshops and coaching, helps business leaders align their teams to achieve the results they expect. The fundamentals are based on Verne Harnish’s book, Mastering the Rockefeller Habits, which outlines how the same habits Rockefeller used to dominate his industry and era can make it easier to grow any business in today’s environment. Thousands of business owners have benefited from the program’s simple, practical techniques. For a list of companies and testimonials, you can click here.

Since I began my consulting practice 16 years ago, I have been fortunate to have balanced my work across all sectors – business, government and nonprofit. I’ve found personal fulfillment in my work in the social sector because it allows me to be of service to others in a way that changes lives.  Soon after completing my training for the Gazelles program, I began work to adapt it for social sector organizations. I started with research aimed at understanding what made some nonprofit organizations more successful than others, focusing on the four decisions:

  • How did they attract and retain the right staff, volunteers, and donors?
  • How did they plan and execute?
  • How did they align their programs and resources in a way that sustained both sides of that equation?

What I learned was what I suspected. The Rockefeller habits ARE fundamental to ALL types of organizations.  The critical decision areas are essentially the same, except for the social sector the fourth decision is resources not cash.

With the help of several Gazelles colleagues, the program tools for making strategically smart decisions and keeping everyone aligned and accountable for those decisions have been adapted for social sector clients. We can now help nonprofit leaders develop a Gazelles One-Page Strategic Plan and conduct the annual and quarterly follow-up sessions to put it in action.

A half-day workshop to introduce the fundamental habits and tools of the Gazelles Rockefeller Habits for the Social Sector is scheduled for March 30, 2010. This workshop is intended for nonprofit leaders seeking a sustainable approach to performing their missions. In addition to an introduction to the program, attendees will learn specifics about a model for strategic alignment of programs and financial contributions. Click here to register.
